The lavish sets and spectrum of colours explode onto the stage, especially at the start of the second act, and capture your attention and your heart. To add insult to injury, the couple sitting in front of me decided to lean forward and put their heads close together so by that point I'd had enough and I asked them to sit back as otherwise I would have missed the chandelier rising up. A few seconds and I'd gone from wondering if we'll make the last orders at the pub, to being totally enthralled. There . The leg room was very good, but the back of the seat wasn't very forgiving, it seemed a bit too straight. "Stalls E33 and 34 (34 being an aisle seat): Great seats with nothing in front, so unlimited leg room. Love, love, love your website. The kids loved it and want to see it again for their next birthday, but personally Phantom had lost some of it's magic. They were asked by the staff to stop leaning forward onto the front of the Dress Circle though, but they still obscured a lot of my view. Monday to Saturday at 7.30pm As a 45th birthday treat for my Wife we travelled from South Wales to see the Phantom ( for the umpteenth time!) were used to very dramatic effect and quite simply worked. She has the kind of voice that you would never get tired of listening to. Was a bit concerned about how restricted the view would be but it was absolutely fine. Don't miss it, or the Phantom' will appear inside your mind and haunt you till you get a ticket. We were right underneath the chandelier. Pontefract. She was very impressive and did the musical justice - easily bettering Sarah Brightman for anyone who listens to the original CD. The Comedy Theatre might not be as big as its sister venues the Regent or Princess, but its cosiness works in its favour. L. Kalberer, I would definitely recommend 'Phantom' to anyone. PS: Paul Johnsons review referred to histrionics and caricature that werent evident on this occasion. Not being a big fan of the majority of music used throughout (in particular when they were supposed to be actually performing in an opera) much of it did nothing for me, and I found myself hoping many numbers would hurry along. This was incredibly disappointing too. ______________________________, Here I go with my review of my seating for 'Phantom of the Opera' on Thursday 12th July 2012. Stalls section A row 12 seat aimeereynolds Her Majesty's Theatre The Phantom Of The Opera We did not miss any action, although the view of the left side of the stage is limited. My only word of caution would be take a light jacket, the air conditioning is too good!!. We tell you the seats to buy, which to avoid, and how to get them at the best prices, Haymarket, Political Philosophy Pierre Joseph Proudhon: One cannot give and keep at the same time Chapter 2: Start Not dreadful but certainly not worth 25 in any way shape or form. Luckily the show we went to see was fab! Sat in Dress Circle row A23 and 24 and they were excellent seats. I went to see Phantom of the Opera just after Christmas time. My boyfriend did say his knees hurt from no leg room, although this was not a problem for me as Im shorter. He's cool enough, not stupid Roaul with his high pants and stupid hair! Not sure if I will go again, certainly won't if I have to pay full price. Ciara Hemming. Ok, enough of the money talk. I had an absolutely brilliant view here. Theatres use "dynamic pricing." I thought the voices of Christine and the Phantom were absolutely superb. It was as fabulous as ever!!! There is a real depth of emotion conveyed by the music and the stage performances of the actors was excellent. And after the first 10 minutes, I wondered if Theatremonkey had seen the right show. Fantastic show! The silver lining for me had to be the 80s music: not long into the first half the synthesizer kicked in, shortly followed by the drum-beat which I'm guessing originated from the same lame 80s Casio organ (they must have been taking good care of it for it to last so long..). _____________________________________________, I've asked around, and by all accounts you know your stuff, so would you please explain to me, in words a simple Northerner will understand, how Phantom lasted even a year in London's glittering West End, let alone 73!!! We saw Ashleigh Fleming as Christine, who isn't one of the usual alternate 'Christine's.' I can't compare the current cast with any other but they didn't strike me as anything special. However, you might be better off with front balcony seats than with rear mezzanine, especially at older theaters such as the Lyceum, the Belasco, and the Shubert. They afford some brief, but generally pleasant, glimpses of his habits and career; and in a letter, in which Pliny makes application on behalf of his friend to the emperor Trajan, for a mark of favour, he speaks of him as "a most . I think we can all be glad he didn't wait for Mr. Schnberg's work to move out or London Theatre would look very different today. I was so far away from the stage that I felt like I couldn't be further away from the action. Tiny leg room, but otherwise an excellent seat! I had great seats in the upper circle (H17-18). I'll definitely be looking to check out "Love Never Dies." It was a privilege to see such a brilliant understudy and, whilst my wife and I will return for the matinee on 18th January hoping to see John Owen Jones, if Brian McCann happens to be playing again we know that we will not be disappointed. The latecomers were held back our side, and then began lots of standing by Ushers in the middle of the aisle waiting to place the theatregoers. You may also get moved to a better seat if the auditorium isn't full! CA, USA. The cream of the crop, however, is anywhere fairly central up to row J in the stalls though the first two rows of the dress circle aren't bad either. I thought it strange that the three seats (10,11 and 12) in front of me were unoccupied. ", TheGreatHumbug: 1st in line got O3 which wasn't better. At full price, I would have preferred to have been one or two rows further back and a little closer to the centre, but as a TKTS purchase this was absolutely brilliant value. When the chandelier lifted up to the ceiling over our heads and the music started I unashamedly cried. Willenhall. He completely lacked stage presence, had no voice to speak of and overdid the histrionics to the point that the Phantom became a caricature rather than a sympathetic figure. Yet he does bring an element of Opera to the role too. I was far more impressed when it came to life and was lifted up at the end of the Auction Scene. I think it's probably the first time in all my visits I have really been drawn into the moment of it entirely. The priciest seats are also the best, smack bang in the centre of the front rows. Katie's vocal range is out of this world and I feel so lucky to have seen both Katie and Sofia and could not choose who played it better! I have to say I was more impressed than I was expecting. E-Book Overview. James F _____________________, Saw Phantom this week (December 2010) for the first time and was blown away! These seats are very good. South Wales I am still undecided whether Stalls or Royal Circle is the best position for this show though. Now that it has, somehow, run for so long, it's going to run, and run, and run, isn't it? Phantom will always be a bit special to me as this was the first musical I ever saw in London - I can still remember being blown away by the experience and it made me catch the musical bug - I've seen Phantom at least 5 times from both stalls and dress circle but hadn't seen it in London for a few years (but had seen it in New York when I was on honeymoon). Christian Ball, I went with my friend, who is also 13, and I loved it; sadly, she didn't. That great height brings us to the worst seats. I wish this cast all the best for the rest of their contract, and I hope to see it again soon. Whilst a little disappointed that we were seeing the understudy, we came with open minds. My first moan goes to Raoul (who is currently played by Oliver Thornton). Worst of all - missed the final part of the lair when, for all Id have know, Phantom could have just sauntered off stage!! Go and see it, if you're around and be sure you book good tickets to enhance the experience. Booked these seats having reviewed them on this website beforehand and would like to add my recommendation as I was very happy. I saw 'Phantom of the Opera' on the 23rd July 2008 at the evening performance. I complained to the box office at the interval, the receptionist was apologetic but confirmed that the seats were not 'restricted viewing' - she gave me a comments card to fill in.However on returning home I e-mailed my complaints to the Theatre and received a reply immediately. I have seen a number of West End musicals and I have to say that not one of them has even come close to the sheer brilliance of Phantom. I was tempted to have a word with the sound desk operator on the way out and tell him to turn Carlotta's mic up, there are lots of times when her mouth moves and not sound can be heard. We'll probably revisit next year if the kids demand!! Probably the best view I have ever had at the theatre. Great vocalists and the staging was very smart. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. On my first viewing (from the Upper Circle) I remember being amazed when the rows of candles appeared for the Music of The Night scene, but from row C this effect is muted, also the cloud which is so effective from further away obscures the action I reckon rows G and H would be much better, or probably the main green area of the Dress Circle. But it is often possible to grab cheaper tickets on the sides of the stalls, where slight sightline restrictions are compensated by the immediacy of the performers. She is superb. Far better than the film version. Seats M17 and M18 35 from TKTS. John did not let the audience down once - he is faultless, and I feel so lucky to have seen him play the part. However, what I did NOT enjoy was the behaviour of some of the theatregoers on the row in front (we were Upper Circle E12 and E13). I do see the Monkeys point about overblown emotion: too overblown and you cease to care quite as much as you should about the characters *** 'Alternate' An actor assigned to play a lead role on fixed dates when the lead actor is absent either on holiday or taking a 'rest' day each week.) Seat reviews: Maybe people didn't turn up, or maybe these are saved for sale on the night? Tickets were 10 pounds each, knew beforehand it would be restricted view. Hands down, the best seats in this theatre are the front rows of the dress circle. _____________________, I went to see the show in March 2009 and we sat in row C of the stalls, seats C11, C12, and C13. Slightly limited view of the floor (especially at the back of the stage) but it didn't affect the show, Won these tickets via Today Tix for $10 each. There is an aisle that runs mid-way through the auditorium, and the best seats are on either side of this aisle as these are the centre seats. I can't wait to see Love Never Dies! I took my mum and my boyfriend to see this show in October 2003, for my mum's 60th birthday. Bromley Micke & Marita, Ume, Sweden. I somehow managed to miss seeing Phantom of the Opera until the end of May 2005. The second time I saw POTO I realised I had missed so much the first time round, so knew I had to go again just in case I missed even more! Originally designed by John Truscott, it suffered from poor acoustics for years, but these issues were largely eradicated in the upgrade, and now even high up in the balcony, the sound is powerful. In fact, I think it's far preferable to have a ledge/bar below the view of the stage, than be behind a row of people who could be more of an obstruction. The cast and costumes, the music was superb. My girlfriend and I went to see 'Phantom of the Opera' last night (6th January 2009). They were very nice, but for 24 we were expecting more than 12 tiny little bite sized treats, they were gone in seconds! Birthday outing for Tall Daughter and myself as we continue our steady progress around every London musical we can. Having said this, these low points do not take away from the rest of the musical that when they hit the mark are absolutely breathtaking (such as Music of the Night or All I Ask of You - all versions!). This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. So what it the emotion is overblown? I couldn't see the chandelier rise all the way up to the ceiling due to the next level overhanging, but of the stage it was very good. Anh Do - The Happiest Refugee Live!! Ahhhh. The Monkey has got it about right in this case. Go see this man in this role before he leaves. After seeing John Owen Jones twice, and Scott Davies once, I thought Earl Carpenter did a pretty good job - though vocally John Owen Jones was better. in January 2011. Can order interval drinks from very well priced bar. I would not recomend the seat for first time watching, but for a repeat visitor it's aceptable. Please remember that the musical was the original and the movie came after, the movie was slightly different from the show (the show being better). The show is almost impossible to describe, as it is so good. Close enough to see the actors expressions and costume details but not to see any secrets behind the special effects. They were schlepping their oversized M&Ms World bags through the aisles, munching snacks, cheerfully commenting their favourite scenes, and exactly during the most dramatic final moments someones phone went off I dont want to sound elitist, but when I pay a lot of money for a Musical the only sound I hear should be from stage, and not the excited yelps of some middle-aged superfan in the row behind me. I must say the seats were fantastic, I totally disagree with other reviewers who have said to avoid the stalls, by far the best seats we've had seeing this show. Sudbury, Suffolk. __________________. I find it hard to see the discerning person finding much appeal in Phantom of the Opera. The managers are the best I've seen in my humble opinion. This is not the Andrew Lloyd Webber / Sarah Brightman Story because occasionally the . Stalls B18 and B19: basically the perfect seats, and quite reasonably priced when on sale. 3.5 stars for the seat, just 1 star for the musical!" So, without further ado, we give them to you. ___________________________. Ramin Karimloo played the Phantom. Less said the better! Stalls seats are on the ground level of the theatre. and the sound design needs perking up and mixing LOUDER! Dedication for the Red Gambit Series This series of books is dedicated to my grandfather, the boss-fellah, Jack 'Chalky' White, Chief Petty Officer [Engine Room] RN, my de facto father until his untimely death from cancer in 1983 and who, along with many millions of others, participated in the epic of history that we know as World War Two . Otherwise a great view with slight obstruction of front left of the stage. His stage presence was good and he certainly had a haunting quality, but I felt that his singing was a bit too 'pop star'-esque for the role. Enter the email address you signed up with and we'll email you a reset link. Tickets left at the box office for collection may be picked up on the day, during the hour before the performance starts. Brilliant view, although little leg room - but that is because the theatre is old, so has to be expected. The music was fantastic, and the singing was mind blowing. We simply want to catch JOJ as Phantom before the imminent arrival of our baby, as we will be unable to do much theatre afterwards.) His performance was a disgrace and how he got such a coveted part I will never know. ______________________________, Stalls F10:There's a good view of the whole of the stage even though the seat is nearer the end of the row. The first volume of Mein Kampf was written while the author was imprisoned in a Bavarian fortress. Both Ben Forster as the Phantom and Celinde Schoenmaker as Christine were superb in their roles with powerful singing voices and there was definitely a strong rapport between them. Would not get seats in upper circle again though as I suffer vertigo and it was a bit steep for me. I don't think we missed a thing. The atmosphere created was a particular plus-point for me, and by the end of show I was hooked. My praise is reserved for McCanns masterpiece performance, combining a slight subtle stature with an explosive, concentrated, resonant Phantom. I went to see Phantom last night (18th June 2010) and thought I would submit a review of our seats. The man next to me was entranced and said it was wonderful, exactly my reaction when I saw it first in 2000. later visit: We sat in the Stalls in row D, seats 9 and 10. 16th November 2007 Result! When he tried to bellow 'you will curse the day ' his voice just cracked massively and you could barely hear him as he struggled to get the rest of the line out. All rights reserved. Went to see The Jersey Boys on Wednesday 8th Feb at His Majesty's Aberdeen. Firstly, I should say that our seats were perfect. Review tags are currently only available for English language reviews. Of course the story is daft, we all know that, but nevertheless it is pretty compelling and as with other big productions in London I just love the stagecraft involved which just makes me think oooh, thats clever the chandelier really is enormous, I was quite thankful I wasnt underneath it, the mirror, the magic tricks etc wonderful. This obscured some of the action, but in the second half it wasn't there. The rest of the cast were completely fine, notably Sofia Escobar who was excellent as Christine.
